Once we got to my place, we went inside. He showed no inclination to jump my bones, but this was definitely a move towards intimacy, right? We'd discussed dating and wanting something non-casual. Instead of dropping him off, I'd brought him back to my place.
He was looking around, as if cataloguing everything. Maybe he just didn't want to look at me. We both knew he'd memorized the place pretty darned well last time he was here. Or at least my running shoes and dirty shorts.
Maybe I should offer to change into something more comfortable, to get his attention back on me. But then again, did I really want to jump right into sex, either? Sure, we'd been getting to know one another, but we'd definitely been taking our time.
And we'd both talked about taking it seriously. That sort of implied more conversations, before we got anywhere near the sex part.
Drat.
Actually, come to think of it, I had some things to tell him, too. I hoped it wouldn't matter, of course, but...it might.
"Do you want anything?" I asked. "I mean, um, something to drink, or...?" I was suddenly far more nervous than he was acting.
He cast me a curious look, and I realized he really hadn't been avoiding my gaze; he really was just looking around. Now he looked faintly puzzled, as he took in my slight agitation. Say what you will, he was clearly in tune with me. Perhaps a lot more than I was with him. Another roadblock...
"What?" he asked, turning to face me head on. "I don't need anything. What's wrong?"
I shook my head, tried to smile. "Nothing. I just remembered I have to tell you something. I don't think you'll care. At least, I hope you're not the sort who would."
He moved over to me, a gentle smile on his face. He took my hand. "Wanna sit down for it?" he asked, eyes sparkling at me. "I'm not worried, okay? Tell me whatever you want. I'll tell you things, too." He stroked the back of my hand with his thumb. The feeling did funny things to my insides, making me soften with comfort and quiver with want at the same time.
"Uh â okay." It was hard to think with him touching me. We sat down on my couch.
He looked rather pleased with himself. "It's different from before. I see more, smell less, but it's different. The couch is nice. And it doesn't smell like him here now. I'm glad."
He looked like he felt smug about getting to sit on the couch with me, no vet in sight. It seemed a rather childish attitude to take. But then I remembered I'd definitely been thinking about doing some adult things with the vet, and we might well have done them, if the pesky wolf hadn't started growling and scared Oscar off.
I smiled at the pesky wolf. It was easier now, with him holding my hand and looking so pleased to be here. "I'm Jewish," I said. "That doesn't matter to most people, but I know there are some who.
